Commissioners Rucci, Davis and Collins continue to ignore the citizens
Sign our new petition and attend a public hearing with the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. Location for the hearing: The county govt. building in La Plata — arrive early to sign in.
We are appalled by the pitiful tier map that Charles County Commissioners Bobby Rucci, Debra Davis and Reuben Collins passed on Tuesday, March 11. Once more, the three have demonstrated their contempt for the public by catering to the development lobby, the Balanced Growth Initiative (BGI).
This tier map will lead to continued high property taxes, unsafe and overcrowded schools, and horrible traffic congestion. Additionally, despite Maryland Department of Planning reservations about the legality of this map, Commissioners Rucci, Davis and Collins each voted — without any reservation — to blatantly ignore the septic bill’s smart-growth purpose.
Ultimately, their actions will kill the recreationally, economically and ecologically important Mattawoman Creek and degrade our quality of life.
It is clear that Commissioners Rucci, Davis and Collins believe their constituency is the development lobby and that violating the public trust is acceptable. A tier-map workgroup, county staff, planning experts and the public advocated a smarter and different vision, but BGI’s agents on the Board of County Commissioners instead decided to designate areas — that should have been slated for preservation — for costly residential sprawl.
These Commissioners’ votes, through this tier map approval, ignore a promised consensus, a more hopeful direction for our county, and the concerns of thousands of residents who spoke out against sprawl at hearings, events and through written comments.
We thank and applaud Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly and Commissioner Ken Robinson for voting against the tier map and standing up for the citizens of Charles County who asked for change and were ignored by the BGI Three once again.
But please remember that we will not give up the fight for the future YOU and YOUR FAMILY deserve.
LISTEN to former Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening, who recently spoke with WeMakeItNews.com about Charles County’s epic struggle to move away from sprawl development and towards Smart Growth policies.
The Smarter Growth Alliance for Charles County (SGACC) supports a future for our county that promotes a vibrant and healthy outdoors; protects farms, forests and streams, particularly the Mattawoman Creek from unbridled development; where no child attends school in a trailer; where traffic is not an everyday burden; where mass-transit alternatives are available as the heart of Waldorf is revitalized; and where all of our communities are clean, safe and enjoyable places to live, work and play.
